Club Meeting 2nd Vice Chairman's Challenge Tuesday 24th February 2026

On Tuesday 24th February Morpeth Camera Club met to view the entries into the 2nd Vice Chairmans Challenge. Vice Chairman David Moore has three challenges during his tenure, the first of which was ‘Beginning with a Consonant.’ His latest challenge was entitled ‘Beginning with a Vowel.’ A few simple rules applied; that titles must reflect of be related to the subject, one of each letter, all the same letter or a combination of letters. Members were invited to enter up to five images and the aim was to have fun and to try something different. Fourteen members rose to the challenge.

Among the entries was an Orchid, rusty engine, an elderly couple, inclement weather in Blyth, a man climbing a very steep incline, a retro Econofreeze sign, astro photography, a colourful altarpiece, ice on Bolam Lake and a triptych of cathedral organs pipes.
In turn the authors explained locations and how their images had been created and, with some titles being so obscure, they raised a laugh and a bit of friendly banter from the audience, especially the image of an invisible car.

Then on to umbrellas at Halifax Market, Ice patterns on windows, ink blots, an abandoned boat, an elephant eye, an alien armoured statue made from metal components, implanted footprints and urban graffiti. A diptych of open and closed eyes was followed by the Undercroft at Fountains Abbey. Also included was an artistically peeled orange, apple slices taken on a light box, Olive reflections, ice crystals on an apple and spent ink cartridges. An owl in flight contrasted with reflections of aerated bubbles of sea water and an orange-coloured rope and fish box.
Some entrants used a vowel in the title of their work, Astonishing; the behaviour of a Sparrow Hawk, Energy; a jet skier at Blyth and Unusual; the seldom seen limestone paving at Druridge Bay.

Special thanks to all who took part; Pat Wood, Peter Downs, Karin Jackson, Natalie Wright, Jeremy Cooper, Keith Pratt, Stephanie Robson, Roseanne Robinson, Dave Bisset, David Moore, Brian Morris, Glyn Trueman, Paul Appleby and John Thompson.
Club Chairman Jeremy Cooper thanked David for an entertaining and interesting evening after which refreshments were served.
